ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF TELEVISION

Advantages of Television
Firstly, television helps us to learn about the world and to know and see many new things. It can often present information to us in a more effective way than books can and make things more memorable. It has provided a great source of media and information for all generations, allowing us all to watch entertaining shows and take in information, with news channels that cover breaking news from all over the world.

Secondly, it entertains us, as it represents an enjoyable means to relax. For millions of people around the world, television is the source of companionship and helps them to cope with the everyday life. It offers the viewer to take them on trip along with the programmers and let them relax while they watch the show sitting on their sofas. This is also a comfort, that people visit many places while watching TV shows.
Moreover, television has increased the popularity of sports and arts. People are able to see all types of sports on TV and watch very important football matches that take place at a certain moment in a foreign country. In what concerns arts, there are many interesting documentaries that offer the viewer the possibility to enrich his or her culture in different domains. Last but not least, television made us aware of our global responsibilities. In 1985, for example, 1.5 billion people in 147 countries watched a TV pop concert and helped collect more than $100 million for people in Africa.

Disadvantages of Television
Wasting time is one of the inherent disadvantages of watching TV. Let’s imagine : if one day , one person spends  a hour watching TV without gaining any useful information , then in one year he will waste 365 hours and in 10 year is 3605 hours. With that time, you can learn several languages as well as finish some studying course. On the other hand, television program are not always suitable for all ages. Heavy television watching that is subjectively experienced as being to some extent involuntary, displacing more productive activities, and difficult to stop or curtail.
Nowadays many people spend the biggest part of their free time watching television. According to the statistics, the average American child watches 26 hours a television per week. That’s how TV programs reduce the quality of real life by narrowing people’s outlook, limiting the variety of free time activities, affecting family relations by reducing conversation, and even having an impact on health by discouraging exercise.
Effects of television on metabolic rate: potential implications for childhood obesity. Subjects were 15 obese children and 16 normal-weight children whose ages ranged from 8 to 12 years. All subjects had two measures of resting energy expenditure obtained while at rest and one measurement of energy expenditure taken while viewing television. Results indicated that metabolic rate during television viewing was significantly lower (mean decrease of 211 kcal extrapolated to a day) than during rest.
Dr. Robert Klesges, a researcher at Memphis State University found that children who watch TV tend to spend less calories per minute-not just fewer of those who read or "do nothing"-in fact, a few calories are used by children who sleep. The weight of a child, the more serious effects. For children with normal weight, watching TV can drive the 12 percent reduction (metabolism). Americans are getting fatter. The modern lifestyle of computer screens, video games and television is resulting in Americans not exercising and eating poorly. A study presented to the American Heart Association on March 9, 2003, shows a strong link between obesity, fast food, and television watching. Pereira also noted that people who eat fast food twice a week and spend at least 2 1/2 hours a day watching television have triple the risk of both obesity and abnormal glucose control when compared to those who eat out once or less and watch no more than an hour and a half of TV.
Sometimes, there are some movies contain sexual material and violence which affected the stormy phase of growing of children and teenagers and should not be watched, even by some adults. It will be extremely dangerous if parents neglect their children to discover the TV program themselves as they will immediately take influence of what they see.

Violence and sex shown on television results in higher rate of crimes and encourages antisocial behavior. This is especially evident in the U.S.A and other western countries. Many criminals confess that their violent actions or attitudes to women were encouraged by TV. The rate of such crimes is constantly growing and more and more often they are committed by teenagers. This is becoming a great problem of modern society.
